Undyne is the head of the Royal Guard. She is admired by many citizens in the Waterfall region. However, recently, she met a very…interesting…monster.
At about 3 AM the previous night, Undyne heard a rapid, yet controlled, knock at her door. Now, who the heck would expect someone to answer a door at 3 in the morning? Was there an emergency? Was a monster in danger? …Was there a human? So many questions.
                                                       - KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK! –
There it was again. Okay, this was enough.
“Alright, punk, who’s ther—” She said, opening the door expecting to see a prankster ready to face justice.
What she did see was unexpected.
There was a skeleton – waiting at the door, an eager smile on his face. He seemed to be wearing some…makeshift armor? Whatever it was, it looked ridiculous.
“HELLO, CAPTAIN UNDYNE!” The skeleton greeted cheerfully.
“Uh, hi. Who are you and why are you at my house?”
"OH, SORRY TO BE SO SUDDEN.” He gestured to himself. “I’M PAPYRUS! I CAME HERE TO REQUEST…UM…TRAINING?”
Undyne looked Papyrus up and down, looking for some sense of strength. …And then she remembered he was all bones. Maybe if she closed the door he would just leave.
“Uh-huh. Well, it’s late…early, whatever. Why don’t you come back tomorrow?” She then closed the door.
THIS MUST BE MY FIRST TEST. I MUST STAY VIGILANT, BECAUSE UNDYNE COULD COME ANY MINUTE NOW!! Papyrus thought to himself as he sat on the doorstep.
It was a lot longer than a minute.
Finally, around late-morning, Undyne came to the door again. Papyrus was still there.
“OH, I KNEW YOU WOULD COME!” He beamed. He seemed…really happy to see her. Did he wait there the whole night?
Does this guy ever sleep? Undyne thought to herself. Although, the young skeleton did seem eager to be trained, and her job was kind of to assist people. Maybe she could give him a practice course of some sort?
“Alright, rookie! I’ll give you a try.” Undyne gave Papyrus a punch in the arm. “Meet me in my front yard, okay?”
Papyrus gave a goofy-looking salute. He didn’t intend on it looking that way, he was just being himself. “OF COURSE, MY CAPTAIN!”
They walked over to the front yard, which had a training dummy inhabiting it.
“I want to see how much power you have, so try hitting the dummy.”
“O-OKAY.” He seemed a little hesitant at first (he probably didn’t want to “hurt” it), but eventually spawned a few bones that impacted the dummy. He actually ripped it up pretty well.
Undyne examined the work. “Hmm…well controlled, yet powerful. I don’t think you’re fit for the guard yet, but you did a damn good job for a first try. I’ll train you.”
And…that expression Papyrus gave her…it was just so overjoyed it hurt to look at it.
“THANK YOU THANK YOU! I WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!” He yelled.
“Fuhuhu, alright, don’t get all mushy on me!” She paused. “…Papyrus, right?”
    “YEP.”
“Nice to meet you. We should keep working, yeah?”
“YOU TOO! ALSO, YEAH, WE SHOULD.”
So, for the next few hours or so, the two worked on basic things like offense and defense, controlling magic, and types of attacks. Although, to Undyne’s satisfaction, Papyrus already knew some of that.
He arrived at his house in Snowdin very happy that day. A bit tired from all the physical work, but happy.
On the couch was Sans, his brother.
“hey, bro. did it go well?”
“IT WENT GREAT! CAPTAIN UNDYNE AGREED TO TRAIN ME.”
“that’s really cool. who knows, maybe one day you’ll get into the royal guard? oh wait, someone does know—“ Sans winked. “i do.”
“THANK YOU.” He paused. “…AS MUCH AS I RESENT BEING LAZY, COULD I SIT WITH YOU? I’M KIND OF TIRED FROM PRACTICE.”
“sure.” He said, gesturing to the empty spot on the couch.
The two sat there for a while, watching one of Mettaton’s shows. They weren’t really paying attention though, just conversing with one another every so often.
“i’m happy for ya – about undyne’s training, i mean.” Sans said.
“YEAH. I REALLY ADMIRE…HHHER…” Papyrus responded, his words starting to slur from his tiredness. He’s accustomed to doing a lot of work around the house and training by himself, but he tried really hard that day.
A few minutes later, he fell asleep, his head touching Sans’s. Sans wasn’t bothered by it; all he did was let out a little “heh.” He got his phone out, and as he took a picture he whispered “isn’t my brother cool?”
That is, before falling asleep himself.

Please forgive me if this is poorly made, I was bored and did it for fun. It is about how Undyne and Papyrus first met, and Royal Guard training. We all know how this ends: Undyne and Papyrus become friends -- but unfortunately Papyrus can't join the Royal Guard because he's too nice. I love the friendship these two have though! :D
I was inspired by the scene in game where how they met was mentioned (I forgot who said it).
